Today I thought I would highlight a cool person I have never met (but I know someone who has out there in San Francisco Land) and his business I have been following on Twitter and through various business publications for sometime.
Many folks ask me how they can earn money crafting or by selling their gallery art. They first things most people do is hop there on Ebay or Etsy, get involved with local craft fairs or juried art shows, join some social networks and create a website....then they pray people will find them and buy their stuff instantly. Well, it is my experience that, although these are all wonderful venues and worthy uses of your time, the first thing you need to do is create a business plan. Art is a weird emotional thing and very often, the creativity you have rolling around there in your head really doesn't care about the details, you know, those pesky numbers on the balance sheet. Artists have a really hard time balancing the creative part of their lives with the business side they have to have to actually earn a living.
Mr. Kawasaki has been mentioned in many business magazines as well as in the regular columns he writes, the blog, and on his business site All Top. What has always struck me about his advice (and the reason I am constantly loaning out magazines or copying articles for folks) is his down to earth writing style and the wisdom he so willingly shares. His philosophy and mantra is to ask the question, "How are you going to change the world?" I personally believe that if every business person asked themselves that question, the world would be a better place...Just by virtue, you understand right there that you are on this planet and that there are other folks besides yourself populating it. The other side of this question is foresight...yup, a plan. If you really want to change the world, it won't happen by mere happenstance, you have to plan for it and think about it in advance.
I've added All Tops little widget there on the right so you can all become more familiar with Guy and his work. As I sort through my favorite sites, I will be adding more business oriented resources for you to click on. Folks, I am passionate about the things people can do and make when they set their minds to it. I believe with every ounce of my being that people are insanely talented and amazingly unique and when given the proper tools and information, they can profit from their handiwork!
