I had a wonderful conversation today with one of my students about getting noticed in the scrapbooking industry. She came to me with her portfolio filled with lay-outs she had created using sketches from various magazines and online galleries. It was beautiful work but, I asked her where her stuff was. There was a weird silence for a bit and then she said, "Well, I haven't seen the kind of stuff I do in the magazines...." Holy smokes Batman, did you hear the same thing I did? I immediately asked her to see that stuff because it would be the first thing I would like to see if I were an editor looking for fresh and innovative content. In this industry, CONTENT is king. The folks with "never been seen stuff" are the ones editors clamber over themselves to find. My advice to her in parting was, be the bright RED spot in the black and white world of print.
