Heidelberg Training

As I have mentioned before, I am working on a really cool project with Provo Craft and Heidelberg Project here in Detroit. This weekend we are going through the training process with the folks that will be in the classrooms of the chosen schools teaching our lesson plans. I am excited about this project for so many reasons. Heidelberg has been changing lives and revitalizing a community for so many years. For those unfamiliar with the area, here are some facts that may shake you to your core.

The kids that attend the schools that were chosen for this program do not have art curriculum in their schools. The zip code where Heidelberg is located is one of the most crime ridden and poverty stricken areas in the nation. 55% of the boys in this area will not become men- their lives will be ended prematurely at the hands of other young men. This is their world folks- it isn't on television or in some story, it is the life they live day in and day out. Heidelberg is the only light and hope for some of these children. It is a safe place where they can create and grow. The volunteers here are so committed and invested in this community; it will be amazing to see how this thing continues to grow!
